Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are one of the most commons species of ants in North America. Unfortunately, they can also be one of the most destructive species of ants, since their tunneling can cause structural damage to your home.
They’re more commonly found in the northern part of the country since they prefer cooler and damper climates. These are also some of the biggest types of ants you can find in the United States.
If left unattended, carpenter ants can spread far and wide. So, if you think you may have carpenter ants in your home, call in an exterminator immediately.
Pharaoh Ants
Pharaoh ants are a shade of yellowish-brown and tend to flock to places where food is plentiful. These ants aren’t indigenous to the United States and probably originated in Africa.
These ants are usually found inside since they prefer to be warm. Pharaoh ants are notable because they will consume the bodies of other dead ants as a food source.
Fire Ants
You were probably warned about fire ants as a child. These small, bright red ants are usually found in the Southern United States. They’re an especially big nuisance because they can sting people. Pavement Ants
Named for where they’re often found (on sidewalks and other concrete structures), these ants are one of the most common varieties in the United States. They usually nest between cracks and holes in concrete.
Because of where they live, these ants are more common in cities and other urban areas. These ants are smaller than other varieties and are usually between 1/8 and 1/16 of an inch.
Odorous House Ants
Do you smell something weird? You might have odorous house ants. These ants derive their name from the smell they let out when they are stepped on. The smell is somewhat similar to coconut.
Odorous house ants tend to change habitats easily, particularly when the weather changes, making them somewhat hard to pin down. They even sometimes have wings, making them even harder to control.
Odorous house ants, like pavement ants, are tiny, so you may miss them until a nest has formed in your home.
