5 Tips on Gaining Legal Protection for Immigrants

Approximately twelve million undocumented immigrants live in the United States, making up over three percent of the population.

Although their reasons for coming to the United States vary, the majority do not qualify for legal residency. Typically, the legal immigration process is only accessible through employment, humanitarian protection, or family reunification. Those without eligibility for one of these visas fall through the cracks, with no path to legal status or legal protection.

That means that even those who have spent years working hard, paying taxes, and giving back to their communities live in fear of deportation.

To change this sad reality for millions of people, legal residents and citizens of the United States need to advocate for them. Let’s see five steps you can take to help undocumented immigrants!

  1. Volunteer

One of the best ways to help undocumented immigrants is volunteering with local organizations. These groups give immigrants the chance to interact with others outside their immediate family, which they may not often do.

If you speak Spanish, you can volunteer to work as an interpreter or translator. Moreover, if you have legal experience, you can help by advising immigrants and educating them of their rights.

  1. Donate

Often, undocumented immigrants are unaware of their rights in the United States. When they face deportation, they are may not even receive immigration legal services because they are so overwhelmed.

Some groups are helping undocumented immigrants, though, and you can show your support through donations. Here are a few to consider:

  • National Immigrant Justice Center
  • National Immigrant Law Center
  • Immigration Advocates Network
  • Families for Freedom

These groups work to provide immigration legal aid when they cannot hire an immigration law firm. They advocate for those being discriminated against or abused. When families are separated through overly punitive measures, they also fight to reunite them.

  1. Protest

Protesting is an excellent way to put pressure on leaders and bring an issue to the forefront of national news. It can also raise awareness among others who are willing to help.

You can join immigration activist groups in your area to get involved.

  1. Call Local and State Politicians

If you want to do more than protest, you can take matters into your own hands by directly calling your local and state representatives. You’ll likely be able to leave a message, so think about what you will say in advance. It’s best to use this method to advocate for specific issues or cases.

  1. Educate Yourself on Immigrants Rights

A final step you can take to help immigrants is educating yourself on their rights. If you do, you can intervene when you see someone being treated unjustly by law enforcement. Although it seems daunting, you can make a huge difference in someone’s life by reacting appropriately.

Helping Immigrants Gain Legal Protection

While the situation can seem hopeless to undocumented immigrants, there are various ways that you can help them gain legal protection. By getting involved, you can lend a helping hand to those who need it the most and change their future for the better.
