3 Warning Signs of Broken Air Conditioners

No one wants to be stuck in the heat without their air conditioner unit to see them through the mess. Luckily, most A/C units will give some warning signs that trouble is on its way before shutting down completely.

If you’re worried you might soon have one or more broken air conditioners on your hands, you’ll want to learn the telltale signs that you should be looking out for.

What are the most common warning signs? Read on and we’ll walk you through what you need to know.

1. Your A/C Is Blowing Hot Air Out

We don’t need to be the ones to tell you that your air conditioner unit is supposed to be blowing nice, cool air into your home. If your system is doing the opposite and sending hot air out instead, it’s indicative of a pretty big problem.

It might mean that your system has a broken compressor or some sort of refrigerant leakage. Either way, you’ll need some HVAC maintenance pronto.

These types of problems aren’t all too complicated or expensive to fix, but it’s not something that you want to let go on too long without proper care.

2. Loud or Strange Sounds

There’s a reassuring, quiet hum that a properly working A/C unit should emit when it is running. If you notice strange and distracting sounds coming from your motor, it might be an indication that there is trouble going on under the hood.

Any sort of grinding, squealing, or grating should be taken very seriously. It might mean that there is a mechanical failure happening somewhere within the system. Not something to joke around about!

Often in this situation, speed will matter. You want to fix whatever the problem is before wear and tear can make it worse and worse.

3. Moisture

What should you do if you start noticing that your A/C unit is leaking? Is there a pool of moisture always building up around your system? This is probably one of the more serious signs of a problem with one’s system.

The causes could be many. It could be something simple, such as a blockage in the unit’s drainage tube. It also could be more serious. It could be a refrigerant leak, which could do a lot more damage to your unit and be a lot more expensive to fix.

Even if the problem is fairly simple you’ll want to get it rectified as soon as possible anyway. Having water build up in and around your unit can create an unsafe environment. Dirty water can be a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

It’s best to call a professional and get this problem fixed sooner rather than later.
