Bob Kahn was born on December 23, 1938, in the Brooklyn area of New York. His parents were Lawrence Kahn and Beatrice Pauline (née Tashker). Kahn completed his graduation from College of New York in Electrical engineering in the year 1960. He later proceeded to Princeton University in 1962 to pursue his master degree. Kahn completed his Ph.D. in 1964 from the same university.
As soon as Kahn completed his doctorate in 1964, he started working for Bell Laboratories. He also had a brief stint as an assistant professor in the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1964 to 1966. After this, Kahn joined Bolt Beranek and Newman (BB&N) in Cambridge as a senior scientist. It served as a revolutionary turning point in the life of Bob Kahn; he started working on computer networking and the application of Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) in the field of Information Technology.

Kahn started concentrating on Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO) while working in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in 1972. In DARPA, he rose to limelight while working on ARPANET by connecting 20 different computers at a symposium on International Computer communication.
