Golf accessories , Gloves and gear are all important. Yet your stance is the true cornerstone of hitting a golf ball. This is where you set your balance, position your body, and prepare for the swing.
The proper stance varies a little for each golf shot. For instance, your feet need to be closer together when hitting a chip onto the green compared to smashing a drive from the tee.
But that’s a lesson for another day. For now, stand facing the ball with your feet around shoulder-width apart. Feel a slight bend in your knees, shift your weight onto the balls of your feet, and angle your spine toward the ground.
Get a Grip
It’s time to sort out your grip. Alas, holding a golf club is more intricate than wielding a baseball bat!
For a right-handed person, place your left hand on the club’s handle so your palm is about half an inch from the end. Grip the club such that you can see two and a half knuckles on top of it. With your ‘lead hand’ in position, put your right (aka the ‘trail’) hand over the top.
Your trail hand’s palm should cover the thumb of your lead hand. You’ll notice that a ‘v shape’ forms from your thumb and forefinger. Make sure this points back at your chest and voila, you’ve got the perfect neutral grip.
Left-handed? Repeat the same steps with opposite hands.
The swing is the hardest part of this entire process. Be patient and don’t beat yourself up if it takes a while to master! It’s also worth noting that the club you use will impact the exact setup for a shot.
Nevertheless, here’s the basic idea:
Get in position and grip the club, rest its head on the floor, and keep your arms straight out in front of you. Then, when you’re ready, rotate your shoulders and arms in an arc away from the ball. Keep your head still, hinge your wrists, bend your left knee (if you’re right-handed), and bring the club to the top of the swing.
Finally, reverse the movement at speed by rotating your hips and bringing your shoulders/arms down until you strike the ball.
